Better to encrypt specific files, or to make a specific drive or directory using a security program. Personally I settled for encrypting files. I think the computer may be easier to manage under breakdowns if /home isn't entirely encrypted. That said, I can't answer your specific question.

    Thanks for the help, Douglas! I did find the app I wanted, gnome-sound-recorder, but it won't pick up my Aspire One soundboard. Oh well, maybe I'll get it running someday. Audacity looks too complicated for me, alas. Cheers!

Do you know the app I mean and how to look it up in synaptic? Its icon is similar to an old-fashioned microphone.

    sudo xfce4-power-manager
    Then it goes back into the tray.
