There is a setting in GRUB you need to edit.

       1. sudo gedit /etc/default/grub   2. find the line starting with GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT   3. add "acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor" to the options   4. sudo update-grub2   5. reboot

    Hi Hanns
I have bounced back & forth between Ubuntu & Debian (Ubuntu is actually built FROM Debian, albeit with heavy customization). Most of the effort by Ubuntu has been in automating the installation, and polishing the user experience and automating hardware detection & driver installation; the majority of applications (ie LibreOffice, GIMP, browsers, etc) are unmodified.

I have seldom encountered problems with having a Debian base install, then adding Ubuntu software repositories to "get at" drivers or more modern software. That actually works well in both directions....  more

Network Manager GOTCHA! (don't turn off wireless!)
Just posting this due to a problem I encountered, and found the fix for it here, for a similar context.

I was working on setting up a bunch of new wifi sets for cabins, so I have a number of stations that have overlapping coverage. I was annoyed by the constant pop-ups I was getting from my wireless trying to connect as I was knocking stations down & back up, so I went to Network Managed and unchecked "Enable Wireless"

The GOTCHA is that I could not re-enable my wireless adapter!! It had disappeared entirely.

I found the rfkill suggestion from Biff in another thread here
    http://www.planetwatt.com/forums/topic/237/no-wireless-found/view/post_id/872

and I had a soft block on my wireless. I ran the unblock, but still had no option to restore my wifi, Argh!

I immediately rebooted, and tried NM again; voila! I had the checkbox back to enable wireless networking.

Hi Ken - STFU is not my style :) (been a linux user since 95) - I am aware of multimedia and some other repos I would pull in if I went that route. I am asking our small but happy community what they would like to see so we can make some decisions as a team. I am a little concerned over the work that might be required in the future to keep things light as well. I know mobile is popular and where everyone wants to go (I have a smartphone and tablet and write android apps) but not everyone goes there, and a simple lightweight desktop that keeps us from throwing perfectly good things away, or to maybe help others who cannot afford new computers is something that is important to me whatever the vehicle used to acheive that :) - I always invite links and info shared as it helps me and others.
OK, I wll commit - Go Debian under the hood; more reading between the lines has me thinking Ubuntu is going to make a play in the near future that will make it harder for derivatives.

    Hi Biff
I first started with linux about the same time; very frustrated with how Windows 95 really started locking out out the tinkerer that I was. I had hacked Win4workgroups into a very usable system (looked nothing like the crayola drawings by 5 year olds that Redmond issued) In that time frame I was often using an Amiga Video Toaster, so I knew first-hand what a 'special child' Windows actually was....
Also banged my head against the bricks with OS/2 Warp (Damn...IBM was SO close to getting it right)
I first encountered some version of Linux that could be launched from within DOS, and that piqued my interest, but it was not quite ready for prime-time....  more

Dang, I just spent an hour WWILF'ing old linux distros from back in the day!

This is all just food for thought; I am be no means knowledgeable enough about the work that goes into building a distro, so if I am way off-base, just let me know and I will STFU

    Hi Biff

My own Linux experience and observation over the years (actually decades now......) leads me to consider that sticking with Ubu .04 LTS releases is a viable option. In my own experience, Ubuntu does not have a good track record with the .10 versions - I almost bailed permanently over the pulseaudio debacle, and I still think its not the best choice resource-wise, though it has been well behaved the last few years. It took a long time for that to be acknowledged, let alone resolved.

I am a great fan of keep it simple, and add what you need, rather than installing everything under the sun by default & pruning later. I am very comfortable with Debian (servers from scratch net install, even have compiled drivers back-in-the-day), but ensuring a newbie has a good experience with multi-media & drivers, can require a lot of extra work on your part.

I was going to fully recommend you stick with Ubuntu, but decided to look into the "Wayland" issue, and discovered that Ubuntu is really startin...    less
