... moreGreetings all,
So the dust has settled a bit and some decisions have been made, so here is the plan for wattOS R7.
First off thanks for all who have helped, tested, killed spammers, etc. I appreciate it. Also the kind words and support from those who have been "patiently" waiting.
In any case here are the highlights and game plan going forward.
1. There will be an annual release of wattOS that will include 32bit, 64bit, and microwatt edition.
1a. - I am sticking with Ubuntu as the parent as I am much more happy with the *.04 releases, and can still work around the controls that are present, and still have a reliable desktop and sources to pull from.
2. This release will follow the *.04 Ubuntu release calendar by 30 days annually, So April 25th means May25th for wattOS, etc...(support will also follow the same upstream calendar)
3. That means R7 will be released no later than May 25th for all three versions. (likely sooner than that)

High Biff, will the next version of wattOS be under the LTS version of Ubuntu? i.e. xx.04LTS
By the way what is the "Microwatt Edition?" Will it still be for x86 architecture?

I'll be waiting for the release by the 25th. :-)

I also made contact with the OS4 guys and told them the same, and they have responded to me directly, so I am feeling good about things. Will just be a couple weeks probably for some transition, then we will likely see the OS4 guys begin work in earnest on forking the project.
tks...biff
David - the original email ?
I sent it to the email address that is in your profile. If it is different than that, then send me a PM with the correct one.
tks...biff

I have not played with sound much in this version, but have made a note.
a pre-release "ubuntu 13.04" version will be made available to the testers as well in the next few days to do similar testing, so be ready for that :)
tks....biff
Yes...there could be some work ahead of you...there is not a direct supported upgrade path to 13.04. wattOS is a custom ubuntu remaster, so you cannot just do an upgrade without breaking and causing all kinds of problems.
Are you choosing LXDE at login as your DE as the upgrade might have installed unity, gnome, who knows for sure as I never upgrade direct.

A work around for others (who want gnome/unity) is to do the steps below.
sudo apt-get updatesudo apt-get upgrade #see if the package is held backsudo apt-get purge gnome-sessionsudo apt-get install gnome-sessionstartx less
OK...debian beta testers..you will be getting an email with a link to try the ISO in the next hour...please keep it to yourself :)
Please post any feedback or impressions knowing its a pre-release image.

The rest of you..I have started work on the 13.04 image. I will need testers for that. The Debian testers automagically get elected as testers, and anyone else that wants in, just let me know. It will be ready in a few days as long as I dont hit any showstopper bugs :)
Thanks for the great feedback and dialog. It really helps and makes me feel good we have some engaged people with opinions. I appreciate that.
... moreHi all,
Thanks for the great feedback and dialog. It really helps and makes me feel good we have some engaged people with opinions. I appreciate that.
In any case here is the latest.
I am going to tinker with Debian for the next couple days and have a few people test a version I have done (LXDE) in the next few days. I am back at planetwatt world HQ for the next 7 days with no travel, so I will be able to do that. Just have a few small tweaks left on the image i have done for that. So those of you who said yes will be getting a direct message from me with a private download link. I ask that as soon as you do that you download, test, and give some public feedback knowing it might never become the production image, but is a good use case test.
That will give us a few days to play with it before 13.04 is released (4-25) - Once 13.04 is released I am going to get a base of that built right away (like days after release)...
Then we can do a side by side and try to make an objective ... less

OK, spammers off, we're back in the useful topics: how to use better, and spread Linux as free, low energy consuming and lower computer requirement operational systems!

I'm checking this page daily waiting only for these words: "wattOS R7 released!" How about a countdown? :)
