[solved] version 5 won't install on two laptops

Hi! The OS looks great. I'm trying to install Watt 5 on two laptops: an Acer Aspire One model 722, and a Dell Inspiron 1150. Each installation comes to a standstill, I think on the second progressbar passage. I clicked on the details window but it only indicates something about ubiquity not being able to determine the laptop release. But it shows that for a long time, after which the progress bar goes a long way prior to stopping. Any ideas about getting it going again? Thanks for any advice.

Hi Carl,

There are some other threads on this, but a couple questions

1. Installing from CD or USB?
2. Are you installing updates or encrypting home directories while installing?
3. Are you connected to the Internet while installing?

Hi Biff, thanks for the note. I was installing from USB, the Internet was attached by ethernet, and I'm pretty sure I always check install updates. Also I think I typically check encrypt home directories. The delay was interminable, so, maybe the updates repository was not working or something?

This is basically solved now. I don't know what the problem was. I just installed WattOS on the Dell Inspiron 1150. I have decided to put Arch on the AO722, because I got it on there successfully, and that can be a hobby computer for learning Linux. The old Dell can have a renewed life with WattOS. I might soon order another netbook, though, and perhaps I might put WattOS on that one. Anyway problem solved! Perhaps the remote repositories were sluggish yesterday or something. I installed to the Dell with four partitions, one of which was /home, and no encryption.

When you have a moment, you might edit the subject line to say [solved] strange delay during installation. That would be more accurate.

I installed R5 on my ASUS netbook this evening, and I had the same problem actually. Then I tried it again, making sure not to check 'encrypt home'. Maybe that was it. Perhaps it would work if /home were its own primary partition, rather than a logical partition. Don't know.

Had a funny problem with KeepassX too. It won't inject passwords properly anymore. I use the Dvorak keyboard. But that's a known issue on KeepassX, so I won't post a thread about it. I think if you change environments or something, it won't behave if you use Dvorak. It injects passwords and userids as if it were hitting the qwerty keys, without regard to their having been changed in keymappings.

Is there a fix for the encrypted home directory install? Or how do I install into an already encrypted home directory?

The argument I finally settled on is that it isn't worthwhile encrypting an entire /home directory. Better to encrypt specific files, or to make a specific drive or directory using a security program. Personally I settled for encrypting files. I think the computer may be easier to manage under breakdowns if /home isn't entirely encrypted. That said, I can't answer your specific question.

In my experience checking "Install Updates" slows down your installation by a few hours. In Ubuntu-based Distros I seem to have a very, very slow installation process with "Install updates" checked. But when I leave it unchecked, the installation seemed to be faster.
