Remote access

  • March 17, 2012 4:30 AM PDT

    Hello from n00b central!

I have a fairly old machine (2ghz, 256mb ram), on which I installed wattOS. I would like to be able to access this box remotely from my window$ laptop and see the desktop.

I am familiar with VNC, so I installed tight VNC through the package manager.

I ran the software from the terminal by typing vncserver, and it seems to be running if I check the performance monitor, but I can't seem to access it from my window$ machine using the Tight VNC software. I can ping the machine.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Font directory '/usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi/' not found - ignoring

    xrdb: can't open file '/home/christiaan/.Xresources'

Christiaan, my greatest success with remote access has been with teamviewer. It is a great program and simple to set up and use. I have attached the link below. Download the Debian Ubuntu version to install on wattOS. I believe you will like it very much.  Use the GDebi Package Installer in System Tools to install it.  Of course, you must also install the Windows version on your Windows machine so they can communicate. If the link doesn't work, just copy and paste it into your browser address bar.

I tried Teamviewer as you suggested, but I have two issues with it (but it might just be me)
    1. It generates a new session ID everytime you run it. I want to be able to reboot the WattOS machine and connect to it remotely, so I would prefer to connect via IP address. There is a setting on teamviewer to do this, but for some reason it is not connecting.
    2. I tried to reboot the remote system from Teamviewer, but it only closed the app on WattOS, instead of rebooting the machine. (Is this because it runs via wine?)

    Any ideas?

I will just give you a brief answer for now, and then will get back to after a little research. In response to your first issue, I have enabled the setting in teamviewer for Unattended Remote Access. This works great for me, and I have attached the link for instructions on how to do this. The second issue you mentioned is something that I have not yet tried, but I will give it a try on my system and get back to you with my findings.

One more thing to add: If you have not done so already, download the .pdf manuals for both Teamviewer User Manual and also Teamviewer Remote Control Manual. It will take some research, but you should be able to find answers to all of your questions there.

    Christiaan,

In response to your original post (tightvnc access), it seems you are missing xrdb. Search for x11-xserver-utils in synaptic package manager and install it.

    HTH.

Thanks Ash, I did the search as you suggested, but according to synaptic package manager it is already installed.

Richard, unattended access seems to be limited to the payed version of team viewer

How do I go about to enable telnet access to my WattOS box?
  • April 6, 2012 5:23 AM PDT
OK, got telnet access going by running:
    sudo apt-get install telnetd

I finally got Teamviewer set up for unattended use. I had to set it up so that I can connect using IP address and a password. (Why is the latest Linux version so much older than the latest Window$ version?)

The next step is to have it start automatically when WattOS starts... Any ideas anyone?

    from the forum entry http://www.planetwatt.com/forums/topic/45/where-did-the-autostart-folder-g

I copied one of the files in /etc/xdg/autostart and changed the settings therein to look at teamviewer. Now teamviewer starts up when I startup the machine!

I also have telnet access as backup in case I have problems with teamviewer access.

I would still like to know how to set up TightVNC though.

Thank you Richard and Ash for your help!

Christiaan, it looks like you have made tremendous progress as a result of much hard work. You certainly deserve the success. I would like to be able to assist you with TightVNC, but it has been a while since I worked with it. I did manage to get it working on the first try followed by a little tuning, probably just lucky. However, then I found Teamviewer, and frankly, I have never looked back. To me, Teamviewer won without question, and for my use, it is completely satisfactory. But, if you keep trying for success with TightVNC, I am sure you will get it working.
